Ready, Get Set, Go: #B4FD Family Dinner Month starts Sunday, 9.25.11

Blog for Family Dinner Month starts in just two days! Please join us on Sunday, 9.25.11, and check in every day to read and share the great posts from our daily Featured Bloggers. (We will publish seven days a week!)

A few months ago, my colleagues and I were brainstorming about what we could do to really celebrate Family Day 2011. We came up with the idea of Blog for Family Dinner, an effort to bring like-minded folks together and create a community of people who believe in the power of family dinner. We wanted to bring together parents, bloggers, educators, researchers, health organizations, and just about anyone who could recognize the far-reaching benefits of family meals. We decided to promote A Month of Family Dinners with daily posts starting on Sunday, September 25, a day prior to CASA’s Family Day and extending to CSPI’s Food Day on October 24, 2011 because those events seemed like natural bookends to demonstrate the broad benefits of family meals.

Since we launched Blog for Family Dinner in August, the response has been terrific. Basically everyone we talked to was excited to join and be a part of the campaign. We’ve had so many submissions of interesting stories, tips and recipes from all kinds of bloggers, including foodies, parents, psychologists, and policy advocates. We are thrilled to be hosting featured bloggers such as Laurie David from The Family Dinner Book, Aviva Goldfarb of The Scramble, Leanne Ely of Saving Dinner, videos from Parent Earth, in addition to having posts from nationally recognized health organizations such as Prevent Obesity.net and Harvard University’s The Family Dinner Project, to name just a few. We are also an official Food Day event  and plan to be involved in local-level Food Day events in New York and South Dakota. We have well-known food writers as well as bloggers who are just getting started. Each tell a compelling personal story and give practical advice that real families can relate to as they try to accomplish family meals on a regular basis.

A special thank you to Laurie David, Jennifer Schiff and The Family Dinner Book team for their help and advice as we launched this project. We are so excited to be able to offer 4 copies of The Family Dinner Book as giveaways to B4FD subscribers. The Family Dinner Book is a great resource with fun ideas, recipes, and loads of inspiring quotes and interesting tid-bits of research on why family dinner matters. All you have to do to enter is subscribe to B4FD (see form on right side-bar) and you will be entered into the weekly drawing. You will also get a Family Dinner Fact Sheet and emails about the campaign. If you comment on any of the B4FD posts during the promotion month, you get an extra entry in the raffle. So please join the conversation!

Now the hard part: Blog for Family Dinner is not about preaching to the choir. It is about empowering those who believe in family dinner to spread the word to those who are on the fence, those who want to try family dinner, but don’t see how to do it, or even those who are skeptical about its importance. The point of Blog for Family Dinner is to truly inspire readers to commit or re-commit to the importance of family meals as an important way to connect with their families. Talk about family dinner with your friends and colleagues, talk about what it means to you, how you make it work, what challenges you face, and offer support and lend advice to one another. Sharing ideas and excitement can help you strengthen your own commitment to family dinner as well as help others. Share our project with your friends in person and in your social network.
